CSUSB now accepting full ride scholarship applications

According to the College Board, an average college education costs about $10,000 per year. That’s a hefty price, especially for larger families. Monday, Cal State University, San Bernardino’s Palm Desert campus announced that it is offering University Legacy Scholarships , a four-year, full ride scholarship program to up to 15 Coachella Valley students. “It can add up. It can be half a million dollars with two kids, in just two years,” said Kevin Gilroy, a father of four, living in Palm Desert. The Gilroys and families like them, are happy to hear about CSUSB’s scholarship opportunity. “Right now we’re going through the process of looking at all types of different grants and scholarships, and every parent does, even the elite schools, college is just out of hand,” Gilroy said. Shawn Shepherd, CSUSB’s Development director, said this scholarship opportunity has been a vision for years. “It’s really about keeping our best and brightest here in the valley. We know so many of our talented students have great opportunities, then leave the Valley and never come back. We also know we’re offering a very comprehensive four year program here,” Shepherd said. The first class of Legacy Scholars will be welcomed in fall of 2017- Applications are being accepted now. “The application process includes a written application that is due by Dec. 31 of this year, and that will be followed up by an on-campus interview and the opportunity for a tour of the campus,” Shepherd said. Gilroy’s son Harrison said this is an option that he and his friends will be taking advantage of. “High schoolers would love this. And me, as a person, I’m willing to put in all the effort to get a full ride scholarship cause that would just be amazing. You would save a lot of money and would have a lot more opportunities in the future,” said Harrison Gilroy.
