Fallen Officer Vega honored posthumously

One of the two Palm Springs police officers killed in the line of duty last month was honored posthumously Tuesday.

Officer Jose “Gil” Vega’s family was presented with the Special Recognition award at the 20th annual Peace Officer and Public Safety Officer Awards Luncheon, which was held at the Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort & Spa in Rancho Mirage.

“It just reinforces the quality of an officer that he was,” Chief Reyes told CBS Local 2’s and KESQ News Channel 3’s Katie Widner. “We met as managers several months ago and submitted his name.”

Vega had already been nominated when he was gunned down, along with Officer Leslie Zerebny, while the two were on a domestic disturbance call. Reyes presented the award to Vega’s youngest daughter, Vanessa.

The ceremony honors officers across the Valley who have gone above and beyond in the line of duty, and even some good Samaritans for their acts of heroism.

In the back of the ballroom was a hero’s table- a tribute to fallen colleagues who are no longer able to celebrate. It included a lone chair, an upside-down glass and a lit candle.

The day, however, was meant as an honor to those who are still here.

“It’s always important to come back and think about, every day we have heroes out amongst ourselves who go forth and pass in harm’s way like that, ” said Sheriff Stan Sniff of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department .

“We’re always proud to be recognized,” added Dorian Cooley, deputy chief for the Riverside County Fire Department. “For all us, a little thank you, knowing that you’re appreciated and knowing that the folks out there back us up makes us feel important and part of the community.”

Riverside County District Attorney Michael Hestrin was in attendance and presented an award.

“It means the world to come here and honor the people who put their lives on the line,” he said.

The public is invited to show their support for law enforcement this December during a Blue Light event. The exact details have not been finalized, but are expected to be released soon.
