Locals raise concerns over new dog park, funded by Measure J

Some locals are raising concern over how their Measure J tax dollars are being used, after they say a newly renovated dog park in Palm Springs isn’t being maintained well. “We’ve watched it steadily decline since it’s opened, and it’s only been three months,” said Eric Wildermuth, a dog park goer. The dog park renovation was a $350,000 project funded by Measure J tax dollars. T he park made its big debut back in November, but now people are questioning the use of the one percent sales tax increase, which is supposed to be dedicated to maintaining local community services. “I voted in favor of Measure J. I want to see our city revitalized. If you’re going to spend the money, then maintain it. I mean this is really unacceptable,” Widermuth said. “It was a great way to spend the money, had they spent it right,” said another park goer. Most park goers complaints were about browned grass, lifting desert landscape, little shade, and overall lack of maintenance. Palm Springs’ Assistant City Manager, Marcus Fuller, said the dog park is maintained regularly, and believes Measure J tax dollars were used well. “We installed new concrete walkways to make sure the whole park is accessible. We installed a new lighting system, so when I leave work (which is directly in front of the dog park) it’s completely well lit, with new LED lighting. There’s a number of improvements that have been made. The grass, we will continue to find solutions to make sure it looks more attractive,” continued Fuller. Others park goers could attest to the city’s efforts. Fuller went on to add, they may close the dog park again sometime in the future to address any complaints. No closures have been confirmed.
