Authorities identify police officer killed during traffic stop
Update: The Whittier police officer slain Monday morning has been identified as 25-year veteran Keith Boyer, according to Whittier Police Chief Jeff Piper. The wounded officer was identified as Patrick Hazel. L.A. County Sheriff’s Lt. John Corina says the suspect is expected to live — and is also suspected in another murder in East Los Angeles.

Officials say a California police officer was killed and another wounded in a shooting while they were trying to help a man who had been in a traffic accident in Whittier.
Lt. John Corina of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the two city police officers had responded to a report Monday of a traffic accident and approached the vehicle when they were shot.
Police returned fire, wounding the suspect. His name was not released and his condition was not immediately available. The slain officer’s name was not released.
The condition of the wounded officer was not immediately available.
Paramedics dispatched at 8:17 a.m. to Colima Road and Mar Vista Street rushed three people to an area hospital, where their conditions were not immediately known, according to a county fire department dispatcher.
Police were called to the location at 8:04 a.m., according to a Whittier PD watch commander, who disclosed no further details. According to media reports from the scene, a Whittier Police SUV sustained a shattered driver’s side window.
