Former secretary of state shares insight to current political climate

Many people came out to the Desert Town Hall, presented by the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation in Indian Wells, wearing “I love Rice” stickers while they waited to see former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

“I’ve never met anybody who doesn’t respect that lady. She’s an icon that we should all respect,” Ken Martin said.

People took their seats, but press outlets weren’t allowed to to get any video of Rice at the event. She spoke about a wide range of issues in her speech including her thoughts on immigration, President Trump in office and the media. She talked about her experience under both Bush administrations, in comparison to President Trump. She said the presidential seat is a learning curve for every president and that she agrees Rex Tillerson is a good choice as secretary of state. She added Trump’s administration needs to forge some relationship with the media. On immigration, she did not criticize the president’s plan. She expressed her support for comprehensive immigration reform.

Before the speech, she also met with high school students. One said her knowledge could bring him insight into his future career.

“I’m very interested in international affairs and political science so Condoleeza Rice is that. I’m also on the mock trial team so the chief justice is also very interesting to see,” Jordan Dinerman said.

California Chief Justice Tani Sakauye also took time to share her journey and remind students to always persevere.

“They should expose themselves to many different opportunities and to be thankful for philanthropic organizations like Desert Town Hall. As long as they apply themselves in whatever endeavor, they are moving in the right direction,” Sakuaye said.
