Inmate from Cathedral City dies from medical emergency at hospital

Authorities have identified an inmate who passed away early Friday morning while in the secured detention unit at the Riverside University Health System in Moreno Valley.

Deputies said 51-year-old Phillip Garcia of Cathedral City died after suffering a medical emergency at about 3 a.m. At this time, no foul play is suspected.

Garcia’s death is under investigation by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. Garcia was arrested March 22 on Porter Drive in Cathedral City and charged on the day of his death with elder abuse, assault, resisting arrest and vandalism. He was set to be arraigned on the charges Monday, according to court records.
