ORIGINAL STORY:

At least one person is dead following a major wreck on eastbound Interstate-10, west of the Haugen-Lehmann exit in Whitewater Sunday evening.

The first arriving engine company reported one vehicle had rolled over with two victims. According to a California Highway Patrol Sergeant, an adult male driver died at the scene. His passenger, an adult female, was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. The accident occurred around 4:05 p.m. Witnesses said the vehicle was speeding and lost control. CHP could not confirm if wind was a factor.

However, authorities said there were three separate accidents in the area that occurred sequentially. The first was a single vehicle accident, the second a two-vehicle accident, and the third involved a motorcyclist who suffered moderate injuries after they lost control trying to stop when approaching the standing-still traffic.

All lanes of the freeway were shut down at one point, but were reopened by 4:50 p.m.
