Importance of vigilance verified on Pulse shooting anniversary

Last year, the Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus only had a few days to prepare for a concert that was part of a vigil for the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando.

“When we were performing it was really hard, because all the thoughts of those people were still on our mind as we were trying to carry a tune,” said Jeff Hocker who does marketing for the chorus.

Chorus members have had a year to reflect on that terrible day when shots rang out in a gay nightclub killing 49 people.

“I think when tragedy happens there is empowerment that comes with that, and sometimes at the darkest hour is when the community comes together,” said Hocker.

Since the tragedy, owners of some Palm Springs clubs have made changes to keep people safe.

“We used to have two entrances and one of them I completely blocked off with a security gate so there is no entry there,” said Jim Osterberger the co-owner of Spurline. “We hired extra doormen. We make sure to card people more often. We don’t allow packages or backpacks, or anything that looks long, like a pool cue in the bar anymore.”

People who come to these clubs and bars join friends for a good time and want to feel secure enough to kick back and enjoy themselves.

“I see a community that is trying to thrive and prosper and we accept everyone here in Palm Springs,” said Davette Johnson of Palm Springs.

“I think about it definitely, but when I go to these places it is supposed to feel safe for me,” said Cristiaan Biallesteros, who is visiting Palm Springs.

Recent events have shown shootings and even hate crimes can happen anywhere, but that shouldn’t stop anyone from living their life.
