One person dead in Chiraco Summit crash

Update: Riverside County coroners identified the person killed in Friday’s crash as 17-year-old Erick Rodriguez Leyva of Phoenix Arizona.

One person was killed and two others were injured when a vehicle went off Interstate 10 Friday night in Chiriaco Summit, authorities said.

The crash was reported at 8:13 p.m. on the westbound side of the freeway east of Hayfield Road, according to April Newman of the Riverside County Fire Department.

One patient who was seriously injured was being administered CPR, Newman said. A med-evac helicopter transported that patient to a hospital while two others were taken to hospitals by ambulance.

One of the other patients suffered moderate injuries and the third had injuries described as minor, Newman said.

The landing of the helicopter halted westbound traffic temporarily, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Shortly after 11 p.m., the CHP reported one of the patients had died.
