Kids learn to be mermaids at the Omni Rancho Las Palmas

Have you ever dreamed of becoming a mermaid? Now your dreams can become reality at the Omni Rancho Las Palmas. The resort is offering classes on how to become a mermaid via its Mermaid University.

“It feels kind of weird when you’re first swimming. But then you get used to it,” said fourth-grader Melody Reyes.

Kids learn the ins and outs from the resort’s resident mermaid Mera. From back flips and front flips to swimming in and out of hoops, they learn it all. This is the first time the resort has offered this one-of-a-kind experience.

“Basically, what we do is make sure they’re proficient, to be able to swim in the water without the tail. And then we do some testing with the tail. And then we do some fun activities like diving through hula hoops and searching for treasure,” said Colleen Pace, the resort’s director of sales and marketing.

The classes are offered for children ages 6 to 13. Aspiring mermaids can purchase their tails from Las Palmas Boutique or bring their own

“We offer Mermaid University Thursday through Sunday and all you need to do is call the concierge desk and they can take the reservation for you,” Pace said.

Girls can make their mermaid transformation complete with a trip to the spa for the Mermaid Magic special. Next year, the resort is hoping to add a “Shark Week” class so boys and girls can learn how to be sharks.

For more information on how you can make a reservation you can visit the resort’s website.
