Boy & sheriff’s deputy in recovery after successful kidney transplant

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed that Monday’s kidney transplant surgery on Matthew Castleberry, the three-year-old son of a former sheriff’s deputy, was successful. Deputy Alicia Lopez donated the kidney to young Matthew after doctors confirmed they were a match.

Matthew’s mother, Angelina Castleberry, said her family has been through a long journey, including 14 surgeries and years of searching for a rare kidney match, and she was happy that it could be all over after Monday’s procedure.

Matthew has been visiting Loma Linda four to five days of the week for dialysis.
