Locals enjoy 6th annual Family Fun Day
The McCallum Theater in Palm Desert kicked off its 30th-anniversary celebration on Sunday with the annual Family Fun Day event.
More than 1,000 community members were invited to the property to enjoy music, dancing and fun. Activities included face-painting, arts and crafts, a photo booth and a silent auction. At the end of the day, attendees were treated to a performance of Australia’s Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo Live.
Mitch Gershenfeld, the chief executive officer for the theater, told KESQ News Channel 3’s and CBS Local 2’s Katie Widner that the event is a fundraiser for the theater’s education program, where more than 40,000 students and teachers are trained in the arts every year.
“The McCallum Theater’s education progam serves about 70 percent of the students in the Coachella Valley. We serve all the elementary schools through the high schools. We bring students here to seek performances,” said Gershenfeld. “We have teaching artists that go out to the schools. It’s an amazing program and we’re so proud.”
The next big event at the theater is the broadway musical ‘Cinderella’ which will begin in November.
