According to Sgt. Dan Marshall of the Indio Police Department, someone donated a chest of drawers to the Martha’s Village store. When employees were getting the drawers ready to sell they noticed there was a World War II-era English hand grenade inside.
Employees called the police, and were evacuated from the store.
“It was really surprised, I have to say, but I am really proud of our staff. They handled it the best way possible,” said Stephanie Minor, Executive Vice President of Martha’s Village and Kitchen.
“Six days a week we get donations of furniture and various items and low and behold there is something that looks like a hand grenade.”
The bomb squad arrived at the scene and determined that the grenade was missing a key component, meaning it is not likely active. They ended up taking the grenade with them and the store was reopened.
