Deputy awarded for donating kidney to young boy

A Riverside County Sheriff’s deputy is being recognized for going above and beyond after donating her kidney to a 3-year-old boy.

Deputy Alecia Lopez has some more bling to go with her badge.

She was awarded the 9th annual Rick Espinoza Distinguished Service award from El Paseo Jewelers for donating one of her kidneys to save the life of 3-year-old Matthew Castleberry.“She has done so much and she saved his life. You know and there is no words that I will be able to come up with how grateful we are,” said Angelina Castleberry, Matthew’s mother.

“Just seeing him suffer like that was the reason why I did it. I wanted to end his suffering and I wanted to make it all better for him and I think that is what I did,” said Lopez. The award was created to honor of Sgt. Rick Espinoza who was shot in the face while on the job in Desert Hot Springs. He survived and went back to work.
