Car fire spreads to grass on Interstate 10

A fire fully engulfed a sedan on Interstate 10 and spread into surrounding desert grass on Interstate 10 between Indio and Blythe Sunday.

The fire was reported at 1:18 p.m. on the north side of the freeway just east of Desert Center, about 60 miles east of Indio, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Initial reports indicate that a family, which was inside the burned vehicle, was able to escape.

Information on the size of the fire was not immediately available.
