Thermal motorist identified in deadly La Quinta collision

Authorities have identified a Thermal man who was killed Tuesday morning when a vehicle crashed into a power pole and a wall in La Quinta.

The Riverside County Coroner’s Office said Benito Sanabria-Rodriguez, 24, died in the wreck on Monroe Street just north of Airport Boulevard.

The crash was reported at 1:12 a.m., according to April Newman of the Riverside County Fire Department.

First responders found a single vehicle in a wall, she said. The victim died at the scene.

Riverside County Sheriff’s Office Department public information officer Armando Munoz confirmed the death and said only one vehicle was involved in the collision. He said no one else was involved.

Munoz said there was no word on the cause of the deadly crash.

Imperial Irrigation District crews were at the scene to fix the power pole. Power was cut from a few homes in the nearby gated community, PGA West. Crews said they were working as fast as they could to repair any damage and restore power.

Monroe Street between Ave. 54 and Airport was closed.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation.
