Holiday weekend crash and DUI stats released

One person was killed among 18 crashes that occurred across the Coachella Valley this holiday weekend, according to statistics released by the California Highway Patrol’s Indio office Tuesday.

The statistics measure crashes and DUI arrests that occurred from 6:01 p.m. Friday until 11:59 p.m. Monday.

In the 18 crashes that occurred in that span, three involved injuries, while one crash resulted in a fatality. In the fatal crash, 36-year-old Indio resident Ramon Contreras was crossing the street in Bermuda Dunes early Christmas morning when he was struck by a Jeep and died at the scene.

The 18 crashes exceed last year’s mark of 15 crashes and are more than triple the amount of crashes that occurred during the 2015 Christmas weekend.

CHP officers also arrested 16 drivers for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, nearly double the amount of allegedly intoxicated drivers from last year.
