Female LAPD officer shot in ambush Friday night

(CNS) – A female officer was shot and wounded in downtown Los Angeles Friday night near the Westlake District in what police said was an ambush attack.

The shooting occurred right before 10 p.m. on Witmer Street, between Seventh and Eighth streets, Officer Mike Lopez of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Media Relations Division said.

The officer was rushed to the hospital and was in stable condition late Friday night, Lopez said. Police had one suspect and one firearm in custody.

A perimeter was set up in the area to look for other suspects possibly involved.

The investigation prompted the closure of the southbound Harbor (110) Freeway at Wilshire Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Traffic was being diverted off at Eighth Street.
