Forest service starts controlled burn in San Jacinto mountains

The San Bernardino National Service began setting fires in the Thomas Mountain area at 9 a.m this morning. The burn area is north of Anza between Highway 371 and Highway 74. The burns may take place throughout the weekend.

The controlled burn is being used to help curb future wildfire risks in the area by reducing the volume of natural fuel. Intermittent road closures are possible. Drivers are advised to slow down for personnel who may be at work along the side of local roadways. The fires are currently visible in Anza.

Controlled burns historically have been a key tool in combating wildfire risks in the San Jacinto Mountains.
