Nomination papers due Wednesday for Coachella City Council race
Those interested in running for a seat on the Coachella City Council have until tomorrow afternoon to file their nomination papers.
Prospective candidates have until 5 p.m. Wednesday to apply for a pair of council seats that are up for grabs.
Mayor Steven Hernandez and Councilman Steve Brown are seeking re-election, while Councilwoman Betty Sanchez, the former city treasurer who was elected to the city council in 2014, has decided not to run for re-election this fall.
Sanchez said: “It definitely wasn’t an easy decision not to seek re-election. I love representing the city and our local residents and I take great pride in the work we have done. But I need to take some personal time to evaluate my next steps, both personally and professionally.”
The initial candidacy deadline was last Thursday, but was extended after Sanchez announced she would not be running.
Currently, Victor Alcantara and Josie Gonzalez are among the qualified candidates running for the two seats. Hernandez will take part in a separate mayoral election, and is currently running unopposed.
Official nomination documents are available at the city clerk’s office at 1515 Sixth St. during business hours — 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Anyone interested in running should contact Coachella Deputy City Clerk Andrea Carranza at (760) 398-3502, ext. 102, to schedule an appointment.
