Two teens arrested after shooting at deputy with high-powered pellet gun
Two teenagers arrested after shooting at a deputy with a high-powered pellet gun.
A deputy from the Morongo Basin Sheriff’s Station was originally responding to reports of shots fired at a home in the 6200 block of Sunburst Avenue in Joshua Tree Wednesday at around 10:23 p.m.
According to a news release by the Sheriff’s Department, as the deputy was talking to the reporting party, they began to hear additional shots being fired at them and striking the trailer. The deputy immediately ran for cover behind the home.
The news release adds that the deputy called for assistance and additional deputies began a search for the location of the active shooter. Meanwhile, the deputy and the reporting party were still being fired upon. The deputy reported that it sounded like the shots were getting louder and he felt the suspect was getting closer to his location. When the deputy shined a hand-held spotlight in an attempt to illuminate the suspect’s position, a suspect shot at the spotlight.
Deputies reported that they spotted a suspect armed with a long rifle advancing toward the trailer, getting closer to the deputy and the reporting party. Deputies said they ordered the suspect to drop the gun but he did not comply with their demands.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, one or more deputies returned fire and two suspects were seen running from the area. One suspect was apprehended at a nearby apartment complex following a foot pursuit. The suspect was carrying a backpack that deputies said had a rifle inside. The rifle was a high powered .177-barrel break, pellet gun.
A second suspect made it into an apartment and was taken into custody a short time later. Deputies said they located a second backpack with rifle pellets in it.
Neither the suspects or any deputies were injured during the incident. The suspects will be booked into Juvenile Hall for Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
Investigators from the Specialized Investigations Division were requested and are conducting the investigation.
