Search crews renew efforts to find missing Canadian Hiker in Joshua Tree
Paul Miller was last seen on July 13. He departed his hotel intending to hike the Fortynine Palms Oasis in Joshua Tree National Park, and hasn’t been seen since.
His disappearance sparked an extensive search that, to date, has included more than 600 searchers and 20 K-9 units putting in over 6000 man hours in their efforts.
The latest iteration of their efforts will employ technical specialists with high-angle rescue skills to scour steep ravine and cliff-heavy more remote northern section of the 794,000-acre park. Search efforts have been beginning at 4 a.m. to account for the regular triple-digit temperatures during the daylight hours.
This is a multiple agency effort, with assistance from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the California Rescue Dog Association, Nevada SAR, and personnel from many different branches within the National Park Service:
Personnel from the following Park Service branches have taken part in the search efforts:
Investigative Services Branch Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area Mojave National Preserve Joshua Tree National Park Death Valley National Park
Joshua Tree National Park offered some tips for hikers in their release:
Hikers to the area are reminded to restrict hiking to the cooler morning or evening hours and to bring at least one quart of water per person per hour of hiking. Visitors should remember that cell phones do not work in the majority of the park and to leave descriptions of their proposed routes with friends and family.
Anyone with any information relating to these search efforts is urged to calll: (909) 383-5651.
