Suicide prevention training to be held in Desert Hot Springs

A free suicide awareness and prevention training session will be held in Desert Hot Springs today, offering teachers, community members and others who serve those at risk tools for preventing suicide.

The event will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Desert Hot Springs Clinic, 14320 Palm Drive, and is being organized by the Riverside University Health System’s public health and behavioral health departments.

The program’s coordinator, Rebecca Antillon, worked last month with parents, staff and students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where a former student killed 17 students and staff earlier this year.

Training in Florida, as well as during an inaugural suicide awareness training session in Riverside earlier this month, focused on recognizing the warning signs and risk factors associated with suicide.

Antillon said, “We were so pleased at the response we had at our first Safe Talk training. It was a packed house. So, we want to open up a second training to make sure that everyone who wanted to participate could.”

While today’s session is free and open to the public, seating is limited, so attendees were asked to pre-register by calling (951) 358-7171 or emailing Kimberly Jow, health services assistant at KJow@rivcocha.org.
