H.N. & Frances C. Berger Foundation surprises American Outreach Foundation with $10,000
It was an exciting morning for American Outreach Foundation, a local nonprofit providing veterans and low income seniors with the gift of mobility through electric wheelchairs and scooters. The H.N. & Frances C. Berger Foundation in partnership with CBS Local 2 News surprised the nonprofit with a $10,000 surprise grant.
The funds from this grant will assist with American Outreach Foundation’s Donate Your Power Chair program plus any future maintenance that may be necessary.
Fay Delevieleuse received her first scooter four years ago and recently got an upgraded one from American Outreach Foundation. Unable to walk long distances, she says it changed her life and got her out of the house, giving her back a sense of independence.
“I was just stuck in the house…it was lonely, it was frustrating, it was boring. I mean it was bad,” said Delevieleuse, “Now it’s wonderful because I can come and go as I please. I just love it!”
Catharine Reed, who presented today’s check from the Berger Foundation, said after reading the application for the American Outreach Foundation, the organization was at the top of the list.
“It’s a lot more fun to come in and surprise than everybody knowing we’re coming, and so we really get excited to do these type of grants,” said Reed.
“This was a complete surprise,” said Victoria Llort, Vice President of Fundraising and Public Relations with American Outreach Foundation, “Thank you to CBS, to the Berger Foundation, and to everyone who came out today. It was great, and thanks for including us. This was huge.”
