Ex-con accused in two DHS shootings in two days to stand trial for murder
An ex-con accused of two shootings in Desert Hot Springs over consecutive days, including one that left a man hospitalized, must stand trial for attempted murder and other charges, a judge ruled today.
Ricky Spivey Jr., 37, is accused in an Oct. 24 shooting that left a man hospitalized with gunshot wounds to his legs, as well as opening fire the following night on two unoccupied vehicles.
In addition to attempted murder, he’s charged with felony counts of shooting at the vehicle and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
Spivey avoided arrest following the first shooting as Desert Hot Springs police were responding to a simultaneous shooting that triggered a barricade situation at a local business.

Police initially thought the victim who Spivey allegedly shot in the legs was connected to the barricade situation, but that later was determined to be unrelated.
The following day, at about 10:20 p.m., Spivey allegedly shot at two vehicles in the 13000 block of El Cajon Drive.
A suspect and vehicle description led officers to the 13700 block of Sarita Drive, where Spiveytried to run from officers “but was quickly apprehended and a firearm was recovered,” according to Sgt. Christopher Saucier.
Following his arrest, police were able to connect him to the prior day’s shooting, the sergeant said. Possible motives for either gunfire were not disclosed by police.
Spivey, being held on $1 million bail, is slated to return to court Jan. 7 for post-preliminary hearing arraignment.
