Toys donated for CHiPs for Kids distributed to local kids

California Highway Patrol officers brought some early Christmas cheer to some local kids handing out the donated toys Monday morning.

A CHP cruiser flashes it’s lights in a neighborhood, as it belts out Christmas tunes, escorting gifts of toys and bikes to local kids.

One by one they line up to get their toy all donated by the community thanks to the CHiPs for Kids toy drive.

“It’s nice to see where the toys are going and to look at a child’s face and see them smiling and know that they are making a difference for their Christmas Day,” Officer Jackie Quintero said.

The items donated included several bikes. A boy who received one says he’s ready to take it out for a spin.

“Just do stunts or like or to the dirt and all that,” 9 years old John of Indio said.

It’s fun made possible thanks to the generosity of a local business owner volunteering to hand them out.

“Just the expression on their face to see the excitement and the joy of a gift when they otherwise wouldn’t have gotten one,” Maurice Trudell, owner of ACME Moving and Storage, said.

Kids of all ages received different toys based on their age. According to Officer Quintero, about five thousand toys were donated locally by the community and were distributed in several neighborhoods from Indio to Oasis near the Salton Sea. Chipper, the CHP mascot made an appearance to greet kids. For one parent, receiving a toy for his two year old son has come full circle for him.

“When I first came to the U.S., the same thing happened to me in Indio. So I’m really excited to see it happen again,” Sam Uribe of Thermal, said.

Excitement that’s bringing Christmas joy to deserving children.
