New Year’s Eve: Resources to stay safe on the roads

The valley is gearing up for a great night full of New Year’s celebrations. Local cab drivers are expecting it to be one of the busiest nights of the year and urging all drivers on the roads to be extra careful.

“There’s a lot of drunk drivers out…so you gotta be really careful about that…because they just don’t know what they’re doing,” said Nita Posey, a Yellow Cab Co. driver.

“Don’t drink or even take medication…I’ve been pulled over once for taking medication for a sore back don’t do it…even one drink…especially tonight. There’s no tolerance level tonight,” said Gerry McLaughlin, a driver who has worked as a driver here for 14 years.

In addition to valley taxi cabs, the Walter Clark Legal Group is offering free Lyft rides tonight from 10pm to 3am with the code WCLGNOEL.

“It’s extremely important to make the decision ahead of time to find a way to get there and get home, so you’re not going to be tempted to get into your own car and drive home,” said Clark.

Clark, who has been offering this ride program for over ten years…hopes to bring awareness to the problem and prevent potential tragedies.

“We want people to be thinking about the problem before they get arrested or before they hurt somebody,” said Clark.

Additionally, AAA is offering their free tipsy tow program for the 23rd year in a row.

“If you are a restaurant owner, a bartender or even a passenger of a drinking driver you can call 1-800-400-4AAA and request a tipsy tow,” said Doug Shupe, a spokesperson for the Auto Club of Southern California.

The tipsy tow program is a tow of a vehicle and a free, safe ride home — within a seven mile radius.

“Don’t drive intoxicated and don’t drive ‘intexticated’. With the increase in travelers on the roadway we must always think about safety first,” said Shupe.
