‘Safe and sane’ fireworks legal in 4 valley cities

With the 4th of July coming up in less than a week, many residents will be looking to buy fireworks, however, fireworks remain illegal in Riverside County. Local residents can buy ‘safe and sane’ fireworks in four Coachella Valley cities.

Kelsey’s Heroes, a local sports nonprofit that organizes sporting events for special needs children, is one of the places selling fireworks in Indio to raise money for their yearly program

“We’re a nonprofit so fundraisers like this helps us all year, we raise 10 thousand dollars,” said Vanessa, a volunteer for Kelsey’s Heroes.

Safe and sane fireworks are legal in Cathedral City, Indio, Desert Hot Springs, and Coachella. Authorities want to residents to remember that fireworks can be potentially very dangerous.

“Have a happy 4th of July but leave the fireworks to the professionals,” said Captain Fernando Herrera, public information officer for Cal Fire Riverside.

Safe and sane fireworks are smaller, stay on the ground, and don’t explode in the air. If you are found with illegal fireworks you could be subject to a fine and/or jail time.

“The fines can range from $100 to above and obviously depending on the magnitude of the incident you could serve some jail time,” Herrera said.

So, if you want that big fireworks show, head to your local professional display.
