Soaring for STEM 5K raises money for local high school girls interested in STEM careers

Saturday marked the 2nd annual “Soaring for STEM” walk/run at the Bermuda Dunes Airport.

169 runners or walkers participated in the 5k.

Ann Goodwyn, the Bermuda Dunes Airport Manager tells us about the event.

“This is a spectacular event at a spectacular airport. There’s nothing better than waking up, having the sunrise and coming and doing a little run or a walk and supporting such a great cause,” Goodwyn said.

This cause benefiting local high school girls interested in a career in science, technology, engineering or mathematics.

News Channel 3’s Chief Meteorologist, Haley Clawson founded STEM-ing Careers and helped organize this event.

“I’m passionate about STEM because I am a woman in STEM. There’s a lot of mathematics and science that goes into meteorology and I want to help promote that knowledge within the next generation,” Clawson said.

New this year to the walk/run was a beautiful display of aircraft.

“This year we included a fly in, so we had different people coming from the local airports bringing in aircraft,” Goodwyn said.

Also, a variety of booths helped educate the community on STEM careers.

“The whole purpose behind this is to create scholarship, and we just gave out our very first scholarship this past year for $1,000 and it goes right here to a Coachella Valley female high school student who is interested in pursuing a higher education in STEM,” Clawson said.

“Please look for it next year because it’s going to be bigger and better, and we’d love to see you here,” Goodwyn added.

If you are a female graduating from high school look out for the next opportunity to get a scholarship to help in your pursuit of a STEM career. The application will open in the spring of 2020. You can find more information at www.stem-ingcareers.org
