Man accused of shooting ex-girlfriend while she was sleeping
A Cathedral City man accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend while she was sleeping has been taken into custody, the Palm Springs Police Department announced Thursday afternoon.
The shooting occurred on June 8, 2019, at a home on the 300 block of East Stevens Road. According to Palm Springs Police, officers were called to the scene at approximately 2:14 a.m. and found a woman suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to her leg.
"It appeared that the suspect had shot through the sliding glass door while the victim was sleeping," reads a post by the Palm Springs Police Department.
The unidentified woman told detectives that she believed the shooter was her former boyfriend, Sergio Marquez, 40.
Palm Springs police detectives were able to recover the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting as well as additional evidence linking Marquez to the crime scene.
According to Palm Springs Police, Marquez was located in Desert Hot Springs on January 24, 2020. He was taken into custody without incident and booked at the Larry Smith Correctional Facility in Banning on multiple charges including attempted homicide.
Jail records show that Marquez is being held on $1,000,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on February 6.
