Deputies investigate fatal overnight shooting along Coachella-Indio border

Riverside County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a fatal shooting along the Coachella-Indio border on Friday.

The investigation began early Friday morning. The incident was originally an assault with a deadly weapon investigation, but the victim, a man, later succumbed to his injuries.

No arrests have been made and the investigation has been taken over by RSO's Central Homicide Unit.

Class at the nearby Van Buren Elementary School continued normally during the investigation, according to Mary Perry, spokeswoman for the Desert Sands Unified School District.

The violence was reported just after midnight along the 47600 block of Van Buren Street along the border of Indio and Coachella.

Sheriff's deputies were also seen knocking on doors of neighboring homes.

Police shut down Van Buren Street to all traffic between Corregidor and Leyete Avenues during the investigation. By 1:00 p.m., the investigation scene began to clear.
