Family, friends and other supporters gathered in Indian Wells for a public memorial for valley Dr. David Duffner, who was shot and killed in a murder suicide on Valentine's Day.

"He was a man that never met a stranger," said Rob Goodwin, Pastor at Our Savior's Church in Palm Springs.

Pastor Rob Goodwin described his friend and church congregant doctor David Duffner as a quote "true man of god".

"A man that cared for people, cared for his faith, cared for his family deeply and was one that would almost do anything for anyone," said Goodwin.

Duffner was fatally shot by 63-year-old Walter Carter of Desert Hot Springs on Valentine's Day in a murder-suicide that happened inside Duffner's Rancho Mirage medical office.

Saturday, hundreds of people filled Southwest Church in Indian Wells for a public memorial for the doctor.

"There was a feeling a shock, still a feeling of anger in people's hearts,"said Goodwin

The discipleship pastor at Southwest Church, Natalie Dawson, talked about those grieving Saturday when the the memorial opened in prayer.

"It's okay to be sad. It's okay to grieve we know that Dr. Duffner is in heaven he loved Jesus, he was passionate about Jesus,"said Dawson.

While Duffner attended Our Savior's, Southwest hosted the memorial because of the large anticipated turnout.

"So we were able to open our doors, we were able to partner with Our Savior's Church and they had volunteers here our volunteers here working along their volunteers it was a beautiful thing to see," said Dawson.

Not only will Dr. David Duffner's legacy be remembered but also his contributions to Celebrate Recovery, a program to help those in the church who are hurting.

"He was a big prominent of people understanding the opioid problem that's here in the desert and actually talked to our Celebrate Recovery group about what that problem is in the desert and how people get involved in it and also how to help them," said Goodwin.

Goodwin says Duffner was a loving man who will be deeply missed.

"David was a man who everybody loved," said Goodwin. "He was just like you and me, he had struggles and heartaches but when he had those heartaches he knew Jesus was with him."
