Arrest made after 4 shot while covering Los Angeles graffiti

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Police said Monday that a 24-year-old man was arrested in connection to a weekend shooting that killed one man and wounded three others who were painting over graffiti outside a Los Angeles ice cream shop.

Jamal Jackson was arrested Sunday in Ontario and held without bail, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. It wasn’t immediately known if the Los Angeles resident has an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

Jackson is suspected of opening fire on the group with a semiautomatic handgun Saturday afternoon in the Northridge area of the San Fernando Valley, police said.

Shortly before the shooting, two of the men had volunteered to cover graffiti on a wall at Northridge Ice Cream, the shop’s owner, Victor Santoyo, told ABC 7.

“I found them a little bit of paint and gave it to them, and then a few minutes later, we hear the gunshots,” Santoyo said.

The four men are seen on surveillance video ducking from gunshots, the news station reported.

“One guy came in, asking for help. He got shot in the stomach,” Santoyo said.

A man believed to be about 60 years old was killed, police Officer Tony Im said Sunday. A man in his 40s was hospitalized in critical condition. The other two victims, who are believed to be about 30 and 40 years old, were also hospitalized, Im said. Police later said one of the victims was treated and released.

Investigators didn’t immediately identify a motive. Police recovered Jackson’s white Toyota Camry, which matches the suspect vehicle in the shooting, officials said.
