Fire crews put out four overnight fires in Mecca ahead of a busy Fourth of July
The entire Fourth of July week is one of the busiest for fire crews.
Cal Fire Riverside officials say they're well over 100 calls above average each day, and they're sharing you can help keep potential fires from spreading.
Battalion Chief, Justin Karp with Cal Fire Riverside says, "Statistically, the Fourth of July is absolutely one of our busiest days, it ranks right up there with New Year's Eve."
Cal Fire crews were busy early Monday morning putting out three vegetation fires along with a vehicle fire, all in Mecca.
Dry grass is especially receptive to fire this time of year.
"They spread much more rapidly and exhibit much more explosive fire behavior and rapid growth," say Battalion Chief Karp.
He adds that our wet winter led to the growth of vegetation throughout the region. When you combine that with out dangerous triple digit heat, it leads to conditions that are prone to start fires.
Vegetation fires can also threaten nearby homes.
"If you have that lack of 100 foot clearance up to your home and you're in an area with heavy vegetation, that is absolutely something that we worry about," says Battalion Chief Karp.
Another threat this time of year includes Fourth of July festivities.
"If you are going to set off even the safe and sane fireworks. Make sure you're not doing it anywhere near any brush," says Battalion Chief Karp.
It's not just the lighting of fireworks, but the disposal that can start fires unexpectedly.
Firefighters are still determining the causes of the four overnight fires.
Cal Fire says the fires are good reminders to avoid any outdoor burning and illegal fireworks that can lead to hefty fines.
