It’s almost time for students to hit the books again

It's that time of the summer when families start preparing their children for the new school year. For some, that means getting back on a normal sleep schedule and stocking up on school supplies.

Many Coachella Valley students will be making their return to the classroom this month.

Students at Palm Springs Unified School District start on Wednesday, August 9. Students at Desert Sands Unified School District start on Tuesday, August 15. Students at Coachella Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) start Thursday, August 24.

Lupita Rodriguez is a parent of three children who attend CVUSD schools. She said getting her kids ready for the big day is a process she starts weeks ahead of their start date.

“We take away the devices and everything so we don’t let them use any electronic devices during the school year and it really helps with their grades," Rodriguez explained.

On the Scholastic website, there are a few things parents are advised to do to get their children ready.

This includes:

  • Visiting the school or classroom beforehand if you can.
  • Talking to your child about school, friends, and any new activities.
  • Getting school supplies ready as soon as possible.
  • Being an encouraging voice for your child.
