Deadly crash near Desert Hot Springs

A person died today in a traffic crash near the city of Desert Hot Springs. The crash was reported about 5:30 a.m. at Little Morongo Road and 15th Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a silver Honda was traveling Southbound on Little Morongo Road , south of 15th Ave, at an unknown rate of speed.

"Prior to this location there are road closure signs due to Little Morongo being washed out and inaccessible to public. The Honda crashed into a dirt berm, landed on the other side of the berm, and caught on fire," reads a CHP news release.

The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Photos from the crash scene show wreckage littered near Little Morongo Road which was left impassable by the storm.

The city of Desert Hot Springs released a statement Wednesday afternoon stating that the crash was a result of unauthorized access to road closures and announcing some changes to ensure public safety at road closure sites.

The identity of the victim also has not been released. Check back for updates.
