Greta Gerwig to receive Director of the Year Award at Palm Springs Film Festival

The Palm Springs International Film Awards is presenting Greta Gerwig with the Director of the Year award for her film ‘Barbie’. 

The critically-acclaimed film, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling alongside other Hollywood heavyweights, follows Barbie as she navigates an existential crisis in her otherwise “perfect” pink world.

The record-breaking film resonated with audiences across the globe, earning a total of $1 billion, making it the highest grossing film of 2023. 

“Director Greta Gerwig has brought us the cinematic experience of the year with Barbie, the perfect blend of comedy, emotion and adventure that has both entertained and resonated with audiences, becoming a cultural touchstone around the world,” said Festival Chairman Nachhattar Singh Chandi. 

The Academy Award nominated director’s other film credits include ‘Little Women’ and ‘Lady Bird’. 

The Director of the Year Award has been presented to the following recipients in the past: Jane Campion for (The Power of the Dog), Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Babel, Birdman), Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave), Alexander Payne (Sideways), Sarah Polley (Women Talking), Jason Reitman (Up in the Air), David O. Russell (The Fighter) Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Chloé Zhao (Nomadland). 

The Palm Springs Festival will take place starting January 4. Through January 15. at the Palm Springs Convention Center.
