218 lbs of liquid methamphetamine discovered at Highway 86 checkpoint
One man was arrested after El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents found 218 pounds of liquid methamphetamine inside his gas tank. It happened at the Highway 86 U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint in Imperial County on Monday.
Investigators say around 2:45 p.m., the 21-year-old man arrived at the checkpoint in a blue SUV. That's when a K-9 team alerted agents his car possibly contained narcotics. Upon further inspection, agents located a suspicious crystallized liquid inside the tank; it later tested positive for the presence of methamphetamine.
The driver, drugs, and car were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for processing. The drugs have an estimated value of around $328,000.
