Agua Caliente Cultural Museum launches new lecture series highlighting tribe’s rich history

The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians Tribal Historic Preservation Office held the first of three lecture series tonight.

Speakers on the panel shared details about the findings recovered during construction of the Cultural Plaza, which are now displayed in the museum. 

As crews dug out the foundation and basement level on July 3, 2018, a trove of archeological artifacts were discovered. The tribe wanted to ensure that the area was properly excavated, preserved, and documented. 

The four-month process unearthed thousands of artifacts, most of which was milling equipment used for processing plant food by tribal ancestors thousands of years ago. 

“This is something that the tribe has been working toward for a very long time. The programmatic circumstances from an educational perspective are cornerstone to what we do,” according to Dr. Steven Karr, Executive Director at Agua Caliente Cultural Museum.   

The museum has already slated two other lecture series over the next several months, and tickets are still available.
