Construction begins on new city hall building and library in Indio

Construction is underway at the site of a new city hall and library on Civic Center Dr. and Towne St. in downtown Indio.

Before recently being torn down, the library was over 50 years old and "was inadequate and not meeting the needs of residents," according to Indio City Manager Bryan Montgomery.

Construction of the new library is expected to take about a year, with completion anticipated "about this time next year," according to Montgomery. The city hall building is expected to be completed in 2026.

The library is about a $10 million project. Nearly half of the money to pay for it came from a state grant awarded to the City of Indio by the California State Library.

Part of the money to pay for it came from The California State Library awarded the City of Indio with a $4.6 million grant for the project. "That funding is being joined with some other funds that are also the funding that provided for the public safety campus, our new dispatch center, fire station, police facility

The new city hall building will be constructed in the location where the old library once stood, while the new library will be adjacent to that site.

A temporary location for the library is open at 45130 Oasis St. Residents can find books for adults and children, as well as access to a couple computers during operating hours, as listed here:
