La Quinta high school grad, PGA TOUR pro Tom Whitney making 2024 debut at American Express

Tom Whitney is one of 156 professional players in the field this week for the American Express, set to make his 2024 season debut on the PGA TOUR.

"I was a little bummed I didn't get into the field at Sony but the silver lining is I get to make my debut here in my hometown in front of a hometown crowd, and I'm pretty comfortable at this place," said Whitney.

A La Quinta high school graduate, Whitney will be making his 4th career start on the PGA TOUR and second appearance at the American Express.

"I got to play here in 2018 on a sponsor invite and now I've earned my way here and get to play as a member," said Whitney.

The 34-year-old earned full-time status on the PGA TOUR after finishing in the top 30 on the Korn Ferry Tour last season.

"I think at [PGA TOUR] orientation we were told that only 1600 people have ever had a full PGA Tour card. That's a that's a real slim number when you boil it down. So, you know, the fact that I can I could serve my time in the Air Force and then transitioned over to this job and have success is really cool," said Whitney.
