Investigators working to determine if home that caught fire in Cathedral City was a short term rental

Cathedral City Fire Department's dispatchers received call at 3:50 a.m. Wednesday by a Palm Springs firefighter that lives two homes down from where flames broke out.

The fire happened off Senora Road and Avenida Ximino in Cathedral City.

According to Battalion Chief, Robert E. Williams no one was believed to be inside the home.

Upon arrival crews determined the fire was too dangerous to tackle from the inside leaving them to try to control the flames from outside the home.

Around 5 a.m. the fire was contained and crews were working to put out any active hot spots.

Battalion Chief Williams says the reporting party believes the home to be a short term rental. Investigators are working alongside Riverside County officials to determine the home's status.

The cause of the fire is not known at this time and is also under investigation.

Most of the home's damages are on the roof and the right face of the property.

The fire was thought to start in the center of the home, then spread to surrounding areas.
