Tax season begins this week
Starting this week, the IRS will accept and process your federal income taxes.
The deadline to file 2023 taxes is April 18. However, Californians who were affected by severe weather in 2022-2023 have extra time to file. People who live in Riverside, San Bernardino, Orange or Los Angeles county now have until November 16. to file due to the impacts of Tropical Storm Hilary.
The following tips may be helpful to you before you file this year:
Check your 2022 tax returns
Refer back to your 2022 tax returns to assess any major life changes. You're tax liabilities might change if you got married, had a baby, sold a home or moved to a new state.
File electronically
The IRS says that you're likely to receive your tax return quickly if you file electronically and select "direct deposit."
Check for EV tax credits
If you bought an electric vehicle (EV) in 2023, you could be elligible for credit up to $7,500 under the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.
File for free
You can file for free using the IRS's Free File program. Taxpayers who make $79,000 or less can use the program to electronically file their returns.
Taxpayers in 12 states, including California, can now use the Direct File program to file their taxes for free. The service offers step-by-step filing guidance and live online support from an IRS representative.
