Big rig truck rolls onto SUV tying up I-10 freeway traffic in Desert Hot Springs

At least one woman suffered major injuries in a traffic collision on Interstate 10 in Desert Hot Springs early Tuesday morning when police say a big rig semi rolled onto the vehicle she was driving.

The wreck was reported on the freeway's eastbound lanes at 12:15 a.m. near the I-10 Gene Autry interchange.

Three of the four eastbound traffic lanes were closed, and traffic was backing up in the 5:00 a.m. hour in the eastbound lanes toward Indian Canyon Drive as a SigAlert was extended to clear the wreckage but traffic was clearing as of 6:45 a.m.

The woman was transported to a hospital for treatment, but crews remained at the scene for hours to clear the roadway of wreckage.

The wreck happened as the SUV's driver was entering the freeway and began to fishtail in the rain, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver then lost control, crashed into a guard rail, and then collided with a big rig truck.

Cathedral City Firefighters said the woman had to be cut from the wreckage and suffered serious injuries.

The CHP issued a SigAlert until 5:30 a.m. but that was extended until the wreckage was cleared.

Crews on the scene were also cleaning up a small fuel spill, due to the crash.
