Driver killed in freeway crash east of the Coachella Valley

A driver was killed overnight following a crash on Interstate 10 east of Coachella.

The crash was reported around midnight on the Eastbound side near Chiraco Summit.

CHP tells News Channel 3 the driver of a truck tractor swerved to avoid hitting an animal. His vehicle overturned and landed in the number one lane.

The truck driver was able to get out of the car safely, but minutes later the driver of a Chevrolet crashed into the overturned truck.

The driver of the Chevrolet was killed.

The area was shut down for six hours while first responders and CHP officers were on the scene.

The identity of the driver killed has not been released.

Firefighters responded to a two-vehicle traffic collision involving a semi-truck and a passenger vehicle.

Upon arrival, Cal Fire reported that the semi-truck was overturned and fully involved in a fire.

One of the drivers was pronounced dead at the scene before the arrival of the first responders.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released.

The crashed occurred just east of the Coachella Valley between Cactus City and Chiriaco Summit.

The collision caused a significant impact on the I-10 Eastbound lanes as fire resources remained on the scene for approximately 4 hours.

California Highway Patrol says the Eastbound lanes are now back open, buy says there is a mile of traffic backed up.
