Swarm of earthquakes near El Centro trigger Shake Alerts in Coachella Valley overnight
People around the Coachella Valley reported feeling minor shaking after a swarm of earthquakes centered in Imperial County near El Centro overnight.
The shaking was centered south of the Salton Sea near the Mexican border.
The largest quake was a Magnitude of 4.8 at 12:36 a.m., centered 2 miles northnorthwest of El Centro, according to the US Geological Survey, and big enough to trigger ShakeAlert notifications to people in the Coachella Valley more than 70 miles away.
The cell phone warning message gave notice to take shelter and hold on as light shaking was expected.
The swarm of at least 18 earthquakes of Magnitude 2.0 or greater spanned several hours into the early morning. The quakes were along the extreme southern end of the San Jacinto Fault zone near the Brawley Seismic zone and the northern end of the Imperial Fault.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
