Gov. Newsom stops in Indio to raise support for Proposition 1 days before primary election

California Governor Gavin Newsom is making a final push throughout the state to raise support for Proposition 1 ahead of next Tuesday's Primary Election.

Friday morning, Newsom toured the ABC Recovery Center in Indio, alongside Riverside County Fourth District Supervisor Manuel Perez and Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia.

The addiction treatment facility would be able to access more funding to the expand resources it provides clients if the measure passes.

The ballot measure would authorize nearly $6.4 billion in bonds to build new treatment facilities for those with mental health and substance use challenges. It would also provide housing for homeless individuals.

Governor Newsom has been promoting the initiative, which he believes will help tackle the state's homeless and mental health crisis.

“So across the spectrum from housing to work force to prioritization and the most chronic the most in need focusing on vets and finally focusing as was said on accountability," according to Newsom at today's press conference in Indio.

Support for Proposition 1 fell by nine points in the last few months, according to two separate polls by the Public Policy Institute California. A December poll show the measure had 68% support among likely voters, while a February poll showed that number dropped to 59%. Democratic and Independent voters were largely supportive of the measure, while most Republican voters suggested they would vote against it.
