DC police officer dies after gun he was trying to retrieve from storm drain went off, officials say

WASHINGTON (AP) — Police say a Washington, D.C., officer has died after being shot when a gun he was trying to trying recover from a storm drain accidently fired. The officer, Wayne David, was a member of the Metropolitan Police Department for more than 25 years. Executive Assistant Chief Jeffery Carroll called David a “true hero to the District of Columbia.” Police were trying to retrieve a gun a suspect had thrown into a drain when it went off, striking the officer at least once. Police are looking for the suspect who threw the weapon in the drain.
