Community Service Officer killed in crash in Cathedral City Thanksgiving day

A Community Services Officer was killed in a crash involving a Palm Springs Police Department employee on Thanksgiving in Cathedral City.

The crash was reported at around 11:50 a.m. on Cathedral Canyon Drive and E Palm Canyon Drive.

Police said the crash involved a motorcycle and a pick-up truck. A third vehicle was also damaged at the scene.

The motorcyclist, identified as Nicholas Griego, 31, of Palm Desert, was pronounced dead at the scene, police confirmed. The Palm Springs Police Dept. confirmed Griego was a Community Services Officer.

“Our hearts are heavy as we process this devastating news,” said Chief Andy Mills. “Nick was a dedicated member of our team and was committed to serving our community. His loss leaves a void that will be felt by all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.”

"During this incredibly difficult time, we extend our deepest sympathies to Nick’s wife, children, family, friends, and colleagues. We stand united in support of them as they navigate this painful loss and honor Nick’s memory. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone grieving with us," reads a PSPD announcement by Lt. Mike Villegas.

Further details regarding arrangements or ways to honor Nick’s life and contributions will be shared as they become available, PSPD added.

The driver of the pick-up truck remained at the scene, police confirmed. Villegas noted that the driver was another PSPD employee.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the collision.

Northbound Cathedral Canyon was closed for several hours at E Palm Canyon. E Palm Canyon was also closed east and west at Cathedral Canyon and Buddy Rogers.
