A military fighter jet crashed into the San Diego Bay near Shelter Island Wednesday morning, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

The crew members aboard the NAS Whidbey Island-based EA-18G Growlerejected from the aircraft before it went down near Shelter Island at about 10:15 a.m., according to Navy public affairs.

The U.S. Coast Guard told ABC 10News that the pilots were rescued by a fishing boat after they were only in the water for a minute.

Both were transported to UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest for evaluations, the agency reports. They were listed in stable condition.

The cause of the crash was under investigation, Navy officials reported.

The EA-18G is a variant in the F/A-18 family of aircraft combining the Super Hornet platform with a sophisticated electronic warfare suite, according to Commander Naval Air Forces public affairs.
